At Dovecot Primary School, we use the Language Angels scheme to deliver a high-quality, engaging and progressive Spanish curriculum. The programme is carefully structured to support all learners as they develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a foreign language.
These units are designed for the earliest stages of language learning and are particularly suited to younger learners in Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1.
The focus is on:
Interactive and immersive learning
Developing speaking and listening skills
Learning through songs, movement and play
Lessons are highly engaging, pupil-centred and not desk-based. Children begin to build a bank of simple vocabulary linked to the world around them, while also supporting their speech, language and communication development, alongside their social and physical development.
These units support children as they begin their structured language learning journey.
Pupils will:
Learn key vocabulary (nouns with articles/determiners)
Develop memory skills
Begin to form simple spoken and written sentences
Lessons have a clear structure and introduce all four key language skills:
speaking, listening, reading and writing.
At this stage, pupils build on their prior knowledge and begin working at phrase level.
Children will:
Use longer sentences and phrases
Be introduced to grammar more explicitly
Develop their reading and listening comprehension
Produce more detailed spoken and written responses
These are the most advanced units, designed to prepare pupils for further language learning.
Pupils will:
Speak with increasing fluency and accuracy
Write extended pieces, including short paragraphs
Recall and apply previously learned language
Develop a deeper understanding of grammar
The Language Angels programme is designed to be flexible, allowing schools to adapt teaching to suit the needs of their pupils. Units are organised by level rather than age, ensuring all children can access learning at the appropriate stage.
Each unit:
Lasts approximately half a term
Includes six fully resourced lessons
Ends with a revision and assessment opportunity
Each unit provides:
Clear lesson plans and teacher guidance
Knowledge organisers to support understanding
Vocabulary lists and language scaffolds
Opportunities for speaking, listening, reading and writing
Visual resources and classroom displays
In addition to core lessons, we offer:
Cultural lessons linked to festivals and traditions
Cross-curricular units linked to wider learning
Optional grammar sessions for deeper understanding
Our aim is for all children at Dovecot Primary School to:
Develop a love of language learning
Build confidence in communicating in Spanish
Gain an understanding of different cultures and traditions
Be well-prepared for language learning in secondary school
