At our school, music is taught by an expert, ensuring that pupils benefit from secure subject knowledge, high expectations and carefully sequenced learning. Our music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, ambitious and progressive, enabling every child to develop confidence, creativity and musical understanding across the years. 

Music is an essential part of the curriculum because it is an art form through which children can express their feelings, emotions and ideas. It offers pupils the opportunity to listen attentively, perform with accuracy, compose imaginatively and evaluate thoughtfully. Through music, children develop not only technical skills but also self-expression, collaboration and an appreciation of diverse musical traditions. 

Our approach draws upon elements of the Dalcroze method, which emphasises learning music through kinesthetic experience. Pupils are encouraged to internalise rhythms, pulse and phrasing through movement, enabling a deeper and more embodied understanding of musical concepts. This active approach supports memory, musicality and engagement, particularly in the early stages of learning.

In addition we use charanga as a key component of our music provision. This carefully structured resource supports high-quality teaching and progression across all year groups. It provides a rich range of songs, listening activities, instrumental work and opportunities for composition, allowing pupils to revisit and extend their learning in a coherent and purposeful manner.

Across the school, children build their knowledge of pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and structure, while also exploring a wide variety of genres, cultures and composers. Lessons are designed to ensure that pupils progressively refine their skills, deepen their understanding and develop a lasting enjoyment of music.
