Year 3

Hello, I'm Miss Wilson - it's lovely to meet you!

I'm the Year 3 Teacher at Dovecot Primary School.  Here's a little bit about me:

I love Disneyworld! Mickey and Minnie are my favourite characters

I love spending time with my nephew Jack - he's the best!

My favourite meal is a roast dinner and I love chocolate!!

I love to plan and take classes out on residentials.

Reading in Year 3...

Your child will be given a set of books and a reading diary to bring home. Your child will need to keep their reading diary and books in their book bags to bring to school every day.

Your child will read with myself or Miss Mc during the week. The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school and at home.

Star of the week…

Each Friday one child’s name will be picked from a hat and chosen to be our Star of the Week. This child will be responsible for helping with jobs in the classroom throughout the following week including taking the register with a friend and so on.

General Reminders…

The children will be doing PE every Tuesday. Please ensure your child has their PE kit on

Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be put in your child’s book bag.
The children are encouraged to check them each morning and give things in after the register.

Spring Term 1

In Maths we will be continuing to focus on Multiplication and Division.

In English we will be exploring a book called "The Rhythm of the Rain".

A breathtaking picture book about the water cycle from Kate Greenaway Medal winner Grahame Baker-Smith

Issac plays in his favourite pool on the mountainside. As rain starts to fall, he empties his little jar of water into the pool and races the sparkling streams as they tumble over waterfalls, rush through swollen rivers, and burst out into the vast open sea. Where will my little jar of water go now? Issac wonders.
From the tiniest raindrop to the deepest ocean, this breathtaking celebration of the water cycle captures the remarkable movement of water across the earth in all its majesty.

In Science we are exploring Forces and Magnets. We will be able to

  • Compare how things move on different surfaces
  • Notice that some forces need contact between 2 objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance
  • Observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others
  • Compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materials
  • Describe magnets as having 2 poles
  • Predict whether 2 magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing

In Geography we will be exploring Counties and Regions of the United Kingdom. We will be able to

  • Name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time

In PE we will be developing and expanding our knowledge of Basketball from Year 2.

Autumn Term

Learning in Autumn 1 ...

In Maths we will be focusing on Place value. We will be focusing on numbers up to 1000, to read and write these numbers, understand the value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, and ones), and use place value to compare, order, and solve problems

In English we will be exploring a book called "The Iron Man". Described by some as a modern fairy tale, it narrates the unexpected arrival in England of a giant "metal man" of unknown origin who rains destruction on the countryside by eating industrial farm equipment, before befriending a small boy and defending the world from a dragon from outer space.

In Science we are exploring Rocks. We will be

  • Comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties
  • Describing in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock
  • Recognising that soils are made from rocks and organic matter

In Geography we will be exploring Map Skills and Fieldwork.

Human and physical geography – describe and understand key aspects of:

  • Physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle
  • Human geography, including: types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water

Geographical skills and fieldwork

  • Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied
  • Use the eight points of a compass (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world
  • Use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies

In PE we will be developing and expanding our knowledge of Gymnastics from Year 2.
