Hello and welcome to Year 6 at Dovecot Primary!
I am Mr Langley, and Miss Ching and I will be here to help you through this very important year. Year 6 is such an exciting part of our pupils' journey and we are looking forward to being here to help you every step of the way.
Useful information
Our P.E. day is Tuesday. Please could pupils come dressed in their P.E. kit - trainers, black/blue shorts or joggers, and a white top.
This term we will be going swimming on Friday. Please could pupils come in their usual school uniform and bring their swimming equipment with them in a bag: appropriate swimming costume, towel, swimming cap and goggles. Please get in touch if you have any questions about this.
What we are learning:
Autumn Term 1
English
We will be looking at Ian McEwan's Rose Blanche, a challenging illustrated text that follows the footsteps of a young German girl during World War 2. We learn about her bravery and kindness, and think about how even small gestures matter in the face of horrible events. We use this text as a jumping off to practise our own writing skills, working towards producing a diary and a formal speech.
Reading
We will be reading a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetic texts, including excerpts from classics like Black Beauty and one of my personal favourite texts from recent years, The Final Year. Together we will also be reading Skellig as our class novel, a brilliant text by David Almond all about a boy who makes a miraculous and troubling discovery in the garage of his new house...
Maths
In Maths we will be focussing on Place Value, building our understanding of whole numbers up to 10,000,000, before going on to practise our four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Science
Our Science topic this term will be Electricity. We will be learning exactly what electricity is and how to build and diagnose series circuits.
Geography
We will be looking at the structure of the Earth, and how that can help us to understand earthquakes, volcanoes and the formation of mountains.
Art
We are looking at the lessons taught to us by J.M.W. Turner, who was once known as 'the professor of perspective'. We are going to be learning how to create the illusion of 3D form and depth in our drawings.
PHSE
Our pupils will be thinking about themselves as global citizens, thinking about the best way for them to be themselves in their world.
RE
We will be looking at Islam, learning about how Muslims show their commitment to their faith.
Computing
We will be finding out about how networks operate.
Spanish
We are learning how to talk about our life in school in Spanish, explaining what subjects we enjoy learning and when we study them.
P.E.
We will be practising our gymnastics this term, really nailing down some key skills and then thinking about how they might be effectively chained together.
